tall trees blocking sun light

Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom Gb

my garden backs on to another with a foot path inbetween and they have a tree at the end of their garden which is over 12feet tall probably more now resulting in us getting no sun in our garden?we are south facing and losing valuable sunshine and some of our bedding plants which have thrived previously are begining to suffer...any advice?

Give it another month and hopefully the sun will be higher in the sky and come out from behind the tree. You can always approach your neighbour and ask if you or they can reduce the height of the tree. Our neighbour asked us if we would lower a boundary tree. Their gardener took a couple of feet off it. Living peacefully with neighbours is very important!!

Hi Poppydoppy and welcome to GoY - sadly you have no right to light. Thus your neighbour can grow trees that create total shade in your garden. If you are on friendly terms with the neighbour chat to him/her and explain the problem. Otherwise you will have to live with a shady garden.

I have mauture trees all round and gardening in light to heavy shade is actually very satisfying.

Poppydoppy the fact that you and your family like to sit in the garden has no bearing on the fact that the tree is shadowing your garden... I wish you good luck with talking to your neighbour but doubt he/she will cut down their tree.
