I received a tulip plant at Easter. The flowers have past bloom, but I am keeping the soil moist. Can I plant them now or do I need to wait until fall? What should I do with the bulbs if I need to wait until fall??

Tulips grown in a shallow bowl have a tendency to break up into little bulblets that need to grow deep in the soil for another 2-4 years before they will bloom again. The bulbs store better in the soil than out of it, so I would give the leafy plants morning sun, or even full sun indoors, and feed them lightly, until the leaves dry up and turn brown. Then separate the bulblets and plant them outdoors, in a sunny spot, in sandy soil, 6-8 in. deep. You should get leaves next year, but no blooms. If you're lucky, you may get some bloom in 2012, but more likely 2013. Planting them now, with the leaves on, they aren't likely to be deep enough to ever get big enough to bloom.

I would plant them out now nice and deep 4-6" of soil at least above the bulb. then give a foilar feed and keep well watered but not sodden. I did this last year and they flowered for me this year.

I was just a little worried about burying the leaves, S.B.G.

the leaves will be proud of the soil, some of the lower part of the leaf may be a little buried but it has never been a problem in my experience. I have done this with a few different bulbs over the years.

Learn something new every day. Thinking of six impossible things before breakfast gets harder every year, though!

I have teenage children so thinking of impossibe things is easy :.........
tidy bedroom, pick up dirty clothes, put clean clothes away, make a drink of anyone else who wants one not just yourself...... how many impossibles would you like? :o)
