i have two bottlebrush plants in different areas in the garden . On both of them the leaves have gone brown .Does this normally happen - or have i done something wrong ?

They probably have frost damage, like many other plants in the UK this year. Just wait until they sprout out, then prune off everything that isn't sprouting. Depending on the species, bloom may be delayed until next year.
