I have a 20ft x 20ft newly paved east facing garden with raised 5ft wide beds along one end. It is enclosed by a 5ft high wooden fence. I am looking for a small tree or large shrub to provide all year round interest and more importantly, to attract and give shelter for the birds. As a novice gardener, the choice is bewildering! What would you advise?

Amelanchier 'Ballerina', Cornus kousa, of if you want a proper tree that's fairly small, Malus 'John Downie' or Malus 'profusion'. Google them if you don't have a book!
