Keep it clean, a jet wash or scrub with a stiff brush a few times a year. Also prune anything overhanging or shading it. If Jeyes fluid is still available a wash with that can kill it - but watch out if the water goes near other plants! you used to be able to get a winter tar wash for fruit trees and that worked brilliantly on moss and lichen - but i think its been banned now!
