Have had no success with carrots this year - they grow to about 1/2 inch and then something mows them off. It isn't slugs could it be wood lice?

There are no rabbits round my way and my vegetable patch is totally enclosed - even butterflies cannot get in-thanks for the suggestion

woodlice will eat foliage so would millipedes. what about mice?

Could well be mice I suppose - will have to try harder next year - thanks for your help
