I have some poppies growing in a 30cm container, they are still flowering, but the leaves are turning brown and papery, having holes in them, but the stems are still firm, why is this happening to them, have they a disease or just natural die back

What kind of poppies are they?

The holes will probably be some sort of small bug eating the leaves. They may well be coming to the end of their season now so just enjoy them while you can, and remember to save some seed for next year!

Thanks Steragram, very helpful, I tend to over estimate how long they last, will be letting them go to seed now and gather in for next year, cheers
