I have been sent a kind gift of 3 x echinacea purpurea and 3 x Russell lupins in bags. I remember growing lupins from seed as a child and have bought them as growing plants (and sat back and watched slugs munch them!) but these plastic bags just look dormant at best. It's only just stopped snowing here and the ground is waterlogged with the rain thereafter, I have no obvious place to try to grow these (all it says on the bag is plant "Feb-May"). Could I put them in pots? In what medium? Any advice warmly welcomed (well, no - chilly-ly, given my current weather conditions both indoors & out! - old stone houses may be romantic but March is no place to be there... even after 5 years I haven't acclimatised...) -

I have both of these in pots planted in ordinary peat-free multi purpose compost. Like you, I found the slug attacks hard to cope with and it's easier if they're in pots. Copper tape or rings are great for pots and my echinacea and lupins have kept going for the past four years. Good luck with yours MJD.

in large pots 2+litres bigger if you can in any good general purpose compost. they will grow away well.
