my mum has palm tree in pot in her garden.leaves are dry and yellow at the bottom and there is a long flowery stalk growing from the middle,what should we do about both of these.

Do you know what kind of palm? A picture would help identify. In the wild, palm leaves on the bottom dry and fall off due to weather. Wind, storms, hurricanes literally blow them off. Blooms (the stalk you see) and new palm fronds grow from the center top. This is what gives the trunk of a palm that nubby look - that is where the old fronds were attached. You can trim the dead fronds off with a small handsaw. Just trim level with the trunk.
