plant for an obelisk

I have a 5 foot obelisk in a modern dark grey (possibly fibre based) deep square topped (about 18 inch) pot, I have tried growing a clematis - but think the roots got too hot, and sweet peas - which soon looked very tatty.
Can anyone suggest a plant that will look good for a decent length of time and stand the hot roots. It could be put in the greenhouse to overwinter if tender - thanks in advance.

I have a couple of obelisks, one has a Vitis growing up (fantastic foilage) the other has a Jasmin (lovely scent). They are both in full sun and thrive.
