gunera manitica

We bought a gunera manitica and planted it on the edge of a pond. However something has attacked the leaves and now the stem - what could it be and how can we prevent further damage?

Any chance of a photo? This will be dying down for winter soon, so it's probably too late to do anything about it this year. Fold the dead leaves over the crown to protect it over winter.
