Tomatoes

United Kingdom Gb

Up until 3 days ago my tomatoes were green and lush and healthy plants with at least a hundred toms growing plump and ripe..I picked two that were ready and they tasted incredible..now for some mystery reason the plants are turning brown from the soil line up and the green toms are turning brown instead of red..what could I have done wrong? I've watered them daily and fed them once a fortnight religiously..looks like i'm going to lose the entire crop

I don't think you have done anything wrong, it sounds like you have got blight, in which case there is nothing you can do apart from bin the lot . if you have any healthy toms on the plants rescue them first. sorry but thats what I think.wait to see if anyone else comes up with another solution, it could be a deficiency and they need feeding more often . I feed mine twice weekly.

Thank you so much Tulsalady, what a shame ~ still there are quite a few I can rescue. Better luck next time maybe.

Definitely sounds like blight to me get them up and binned or burnt, do not put in compost, as soon as possible. There seems to have been a massive problem with blight this year. Remember not to grow tomatoes or potatoes in that area of land for several years.

It seems pretty prevalent this year, even in dry and hot weather here. The other option is to spray with Bordeaux mixture (a copper sulphate based fungicide) before the blight hits. This used to be organically approved, but maybe can't be purchased anymore in the UK. Some other copper based product might be available.

Yes ,Bertiefox,Bordeaux mixture can still be bought at a garden center.
I have used it this year on my outdoor toms and it seemes to work.
The mixture is blue and the plants look very strange, the tomatoes are also covered in blue spots ,but having picked a few ripe ones ,and washed them, they taste fine.
Most of them are 'Ferline' which are reckoned to be blight resistant but I sprayed them as soon as I read that some of the GOY members were having trouble.
Last year I suffered, and decided not to wait and see,but to spray to be on the safe side.
Starting seeds early in the year and nursing them for so long,it is such a disapointment .
I am still looking at them carefully and cant believe the stuff is working !!
If things change I will report it.
