How to protect apples from birds eating them!

We have several young apple trees with about ten to twenty apples on each tree. Each day a couple are pecked at and ruined. They aren't ready to pick yet, any suggestions how I could protect them as I can't cover the whole trees?

You could try netting but I suspect you are just going to have to put up with

You could try hanging Christmas mirror baubles as apparently birds are afraid of their own image....Or find a big cat!

Any ancient CD's you can hang up - birds hate them too apparently...I kept even pigeons off my peas one year doing that...it might work on apple trees!
