Why are the leaves on my apple tree so small? Why are the branches drying out?

I have two fuji apple trees that were planted before I bought my house last fall. They look to be a few years old. One of them seems to have developed a disease and is not doing well, and I would appreciate any help you might be able to offer in diagnosing the disease and helping me find a cure. I've included pictures of the dying tree, with the small leaves, some branches drying and dying, and the trunk drying out with a crack developing.
