i cut an japanese anenomie down last year and this year it has come out with a smaller leaf and different colour flowers .why?

the smaller leaf could possibly be accounted for by the lack of rain last month, and the very hot weather conditions - as for the different colour, you don't say whether it was white or pink last year, nor what colour its turned out this year - be interested to know and a pic would be good. You are sure its the same plant you cut down?
