How are your tomatoes doing?

Asked on 26 Jul, 2007

Everyone round here is losing their crop to blight. they were doing fine till blight set in so I have pulled up the lot and planted late crops in the space vacated. The greenhouse ones are cropping fine. I usually have tomatoes till nearly christmas - but won't have this year. I have bought the organic variety Ferline for next year, as it's supposed to be resistant to blight and I think I will plant most in the polytunnel. This rain hasn't helped.
Any suggestions how to prevent the same next year?

Hi Tussie, thanks for the reminder - I've just tied mine again as they're getting quite tall. We've had none to eat yet, although the tomatoes right at the bottom of the plant are almost ripe. The plants seem in quite good health but almost all of the fruit are still green. I can't remember when they started to ripen last year.

I shaded my greenhouse earlier in the year (HA HA) so the poor tomatoes have simply stayed green. I have also had some grey mould on some leaves, which I've cut off and destroyed. Only one ripe tomato so far, although the ones growing outside have begun to ripen!!! Not as much flavour as previous years, though. I grow 'Gardener's Delight', as we prefer cherry toms.

Hi all, my greenhouse ones were planted very early as we have a south facing greenhouse attached to the bungalow, those ripened early and have been cropping well. The outdoor toms though have been a washout.
late blight deccimated them, even the stems went black. Spritz, I agree with you regarding flavour, it takes sunshine to give that delicious sweetness, and there hasn't been a lot of that. Even the cultivated blackberries are lacking sweetness though quite black and juicy, so I cooked them with apple and fruit sugar.

Hi, my toms "black cherry" are still green at the moment and although there are plenty on each plants I'm getting worried they're not going to ripen. I've not grown this type of tom before usually grow gardeners delight as they always do well. I got my seeds off ebay :-)

Hi Sodapopkic, last year was much sunnier, it may just be the lack of sunshine slowing things down. I had fantastic sweetcorn last year with the variety blaize, grew a different variety this year and it's not so good as last year, but that may be due to the awful summer, not the variety.
There is still time for them to ripen.
