Plant forsythia near retaining wall?

Hello. I am interested in planting forsythia for privacy. We have a retaining wall with a fence around the top which encloses our yard. There is a small, steep hill that slopes away from the retaining wall. I am wondering if it would be okay to plant the forsythia bushes/trees about a foot or two from the wall (since I have very little space in which to do it) or will it damage the retaining wall?
