October roses

October roses

Since Beryl can't go to the garden the garden must come to Beryl,
so I picked these roses for her today.
They won't last as long in the house as they would in the garden but they cheer her up so that's fine :)

Wonderful varieties there Hywel and a lovely thought from you to Beryl I am sure she will love them. A level teaspoon on baking soda in the water they will last longer especially if they are low down I have mine placed on my hearth.

Thank you both, do either of you know where I can et baking soda, I've heard it can take tea stains from china cups.

That is very thoughtful I am sure Beryl will enjoy having these for even a short time. Baking soda is available in all supermarkets on the home baking section. Lemonade is what we were advised to use for cut flowers when we were preparing for an Open Day at the Church. It seems anything with sugar or glucose will extend the life of roses as will making a cut in the bottom of the stem. It is important to remove all the leaves on flower stems which could come in contact with the water as they will rot and shorten the vase life. We were also told not to plunge the stems in icy cold water. Salt rubbed gently on tea stains in your china teacups will remove those ugly stains.

Thank you both …

Scotsgran I have looked in some supermarkets but can't find baking soda. I'll have to look again.
Thank you for the advice about salt. I'll try it.

Hywel, it's called baking powder. Can't believe a supermarket doesn't stock it.

Just thought, Scotsgran might be meaning Bi-carb of soda, both are used in baking. This will also clean tea cups. I just put a bit of sugar in flower water.

Thank you. Yes it's baking powder. My mother used it. I can't find it but maybe I haven't looked hard enough.
I've tried bicarb but it hasn't worked.

Imagine roses in October~ we are in Mums land here!
Beautiful roses, so envious. We might have a frost tonight.

Thanks. We have lots of roses this autumn. Sometimes they flower until almost Christmas time if the weather is mild.
My mums are all in bud.
I hope you don't have frost. It seems early for that yet.
