Chelonopsis yagiharana - 2017 (Chelonopsis yagiharana)

I can never understand why you don't see this plant more often. Less than a foot tall, it forms a colony up to two feet across, and flowers from late summer. Takes part shade, likes a reasonable soil (it won't stand being waterlogged), and is pest- and disease-free. May flag in dry conditions, but a can full of water soon revives it.

There is a NA Chelone developed by Heritage Perennials called C. lyonii "Hot Lips" 1.142.030 which looks very similar to the Japanese yagiharana but have darker green foliage and they don't seem to mind water as much. They are advertised as "water side" plants...but they will grow under almost any soil and temperate climate conditions. I have the pink C.obliqua and hope to find the 'alba' at some time in the future. I agree they are lovely and will soon be better appreciated I'm sure.
