Lightning

Lightning

First big thunderstorm this Spring woke me up between 4 and 430AM so I went out to my porch and watched the lightning for a while. One bolt stretched across the entire sky it seemed like, not something I see very often

This has gone into my faves as well.

Incredible how you've captured the return stroke in mid-strike - did it hit the tree or is the bolt striking behind it?

What camera were you using? damn good one - lol and of course a good photographer behind it!

That is some serious lightening.

Thank you, the storm was moving away from me when I shot this and the lightning was behind the tree. The camera I am using is actually a pretty basic Sony that I got last year and these images come from a video I shot with it. I can take pictures of it too but I only do it when the lightning is frequent, otherwise it takes too long and uses a lot of my memory card and battery.

my prob with pics is that the snap freezes on the screen for a couple of seconds so it's impossible to take a second picture stright after the first, so if I miss the first time there's no second chance. Of course, maybe that would work on another setting. i keep forgetting I have vid option, - it's a bit of fiddling to get it, so by the time I found it I'd hae missed the event anyway. sigh

Can you change the setting from single shot to continuous so your camera is taking pictures as long as you hold down the button? The only other thing I do is use a tripod, since the light intensity varies so does the shutter speed and using a tripod keeps the darker images in focus.

I really should play with the settings to see what htey do. I have a very small table-top tripod, but i'd still need to be close enough to press the button.

lol shudder to think how blurred a keep-finger-dpwm pic would be!

my camera has an annoying trick of not taking pics when i press the button lightly; it just makes a litle square in the middle, presumably focusing on the main thing in view - does that whenever I try to press the button gentlly, three or four times in a row until i get fed up and press the button too hard. sigh. I really need a remote-ctontrol cord!
