Yes, the purple spikes are acanthus spinosus.
The blue spikes are on a veronica. Just out of shot is a white-flowered form of veronica longifolia; I think the blue is a seedling from it (blue is the usual flower colour for this veronica).
This is the view I get from the front door.

I really like the meandering pathway, with plenty of plant material to occupy the eye. What is that large clump growing the the background with the purple blooms and the large scalloped leaves, is it acanthus ? Is the plant to the left and alittle forward,a clump of echium ? Great picture.
