Great photo well caught :-)
Not very common here but a couple of years ago I had a close encounter with two of what hubby thought looked like red kites, I was gardening early spring time and less than 6ft away these two rather large birds landed screeching and fighting, the smaller bird ended up the looser and spent the next hour or so hiding in the hedge while the other bird circled overhead, I never saw them again but it was quite an experience to be so close to them.

Oooo you could have experienced a Goshawk sighting Simbad - we have one here and its tried and thankfully failed one time to take one of our chickens- she was HUGE....frightened the living daylights out of me poor old brahma chicken ...bless her she was really wobbly when she got up- looked like she'd been at the cooking sherry :( amazing birds thou have great respect for them!

Excellent photo Beehappy! There aren't many in south west Pembs as yet but I did see a pair the other day.
Do you live up towards the Beacons?
Simbad, you can always tell the kites as they have forked tails.

Never too sure of my birds of prey Bee and Stera we don't get that many here except for sparrowhawk and kestrel but they were definitely much bigger than either of those, just remember they were reddy brown in colouring, I do remember a man on the allotments near us saying he'd seen what he thought were several buzzards around the same time but he wasn't sure either so suppose we'll never know.
Oh your poor chicken Bee glad she escaped.

Yes Steragram good to hear that their moving across but not surprising seeing as some parts of Wales are so well stocked :)
My hubby's the bird man ;) so he id's them for me.........
he said maybe yours could have been a male & female buzzard? as the female is much larger and they do scrap when deciding their mating partner ....so maybe he went and sulked when she didnt fall for his charms :0)
Yes she was very lucky that day....she very cleverly laid down very flat and play acted dead- it worked for her im pleased to say!

Thanks for that Bee thats probably it then buzzards, nice to know the female's still the boss even in the bird population lol.
Clever chicken, strange how they know instinctively exactly what to do :-)

No Beehappy, not buzzards - we get lots of those. Were you replying to Simbad?

27 Jan, 2014

Ooooo yes i can see how i've answered!
The first part of the reply was to you Steragram :)
Then the line from my OH ID's them for me.... is in answer to Simbad comments ....will make sure i prefix the double reply's with the member name next time '0)

And yes Simbad were still as the song goes "The female of the species is more deadly than the male ha ha!!
And thankfully our chicky girl proved that, that day!
