turns out i have 3 inches of top soil and solid rock clay :(
im out of ideas and energy. suggestions most welcome.

I have to say first of all GlamWales I think you have a lovely space here! I have quite heavy clay soil myself, bit I found repeated digging and some sand/gravel works wonders. Don't give up!
