Horse-hair Worms?

Beside a steep path between two belawned banks in a shallow pool of fresh rainwater these wriggly creatures suddenly appeared after some rather heavy showers. There were also a few earthworms and other small creatures darting about. These all seem to have come from the surrounding grassy turf - but why have they exposed themselves to predators and in broad daylight at that - birds abound hereabouts? Scientists tell us that healthy, fertile land is inhabited by a multiplicity of life-forms so is this just the tip of the bio-iceberg which exists in our gardens and also in the pots on my windowsills?
