I think it looks like a rubber tree plant. Ficus elastica. We had one years ago but it threatened to take over the house so we let it go to a local hotel. We were unaware that you can successfully prune them.

it looks like a rubber plant to me. I had one that went rather berserk: I didn't know that if a leaf is knocked off, unless the stem is sealed, it'll grow another branch.

Eventually I had a plant that was more like a tree, it had so many offshoots. Probably just as well, as it was over five feet tall by then; if it had put all that growing into a single stem I'd have had to cut a hole in the ceiling and share it wiht the people upstairs!

I'm not sure what the broken-off leaf wound should be sealed with; someone told me cigarette ash, someone else said Vaseline.

And the leaves will need to be cleaned now and then: Baby Bio sell "leafshine", but I've read that milk will do the job just as well. I had so many leaves towards the end that I sprayed them with a mister and then used a 1" paintbrush dipped in milk to get as many done as I could reach.
