They look really nice together Dotty. Do you take them in for the winter then ?

Cinders OH has just spent the whole day taking them out of the big pots and putting them in individual pots to bring into the garden room!! some of these plants were only 3ins tall (cheaper to buy this way) when we bought them and now look at them........the windowsills are large thank goodness.

Lovely. My windowsills are large too, and mine are full of Streptocarpus ! I have brought a lot in from the greenhouse now as there is no heat in there and it is getting so much colder at night now.

Unfortunately we do not have a greenhouse, as it would take up too much room, so all the windowsills in the house will be occupied.!!

My daughter has brought me some plants tonight (for my birthday yesterday) and I was wondering if I should put the sempervivum (?) outside or keep them inside. From reading this Dotty I would think I should keep them in the house over winter?

Do they need any special care? watering? or do they rest in the winter and prefer to be in dry soil/grit. Larger pot/splitting? They quite fill the small stone pots they are in at the moment.

Any ideas or tips, Dotty, would be helpful and appreciated. Ta.

Belated birthday wishes to you Whistonlass........... Sempervivums are hardy and can tolerate most winters, make sure that is what they are though, gritty compost will do the job, most of our sempers are in a stone sink, as they do grow reasonably fast so give them some room, have you put any pics of them on here yet?

I will put up pictures tomorrow....I have put up pictures of other plant gifts in my most recent blog. My son-in-law helped me to download them tonight into my picasa so I'm hoping tomorrow I'll remember his instructions and can get the rest of my photos off my camera! I'm a bit technically-challenged! lol

From what you've said, Dotty it sounds like they may need repotting or even splitting up.....they do fill the stone pots they are in at the moment (the pots are roughly 5 or 6" square and about the same depth.

i would leave them till the spring. pot bound is good in the winter...

Ok, Sandra...thanks for your advice. I will leave them well enough alone for the winter. I'm assuming it's ok to keep them indoors and water them very little?

2 Oct, 2010

they are hardy but if u are going to keep them indoors keep them in a cool sunny place..

2 Oct, 2010

Well if they are hardy I could put them outside....we have a set of steps that used to go to our outside loo but they are redundant now....I could display them quite nicely on there. Thanks, Sandra.

I've posted photos in my newest blog, Sandra and Dotty. No doubt I'll be asking more about these in spring when winter is over. Thanks for your advice.
