Chelsea Flower Show 2008

Well one of the reasons our new garden shops section was a little late is that I spent Thursday evening visiting Chelsea flower show, an enjoyable but very hectic few hours.
The evening tickets let you in from 5.30pm to 8pm; two and a half hours is nowhere near enough time to see everything and relaxing with a Pimms got scratched from my todo list within minutes of arriving.

There’s something strange about being caught up in the crowds around the show gardens. To me gardens are a place to relax, certainly mine is, and some of the gardens look very relaxing. However there’s some irony in trying to appreciate their tranquility from the middle of a jostling crowd.
Zen garden
Getting close enough to take a picture without the back of someone’s head in is tricky too – everyone is very polite but I’m sure that the heel on my toes wasn’t really an accident.
I don’t know if it was just me but I thought that purple featured heavily in quite a lot of the gardens, I guess garden designers have trends too? There were also quite a few gardens and exhibits in the grand marquee highlighting climate change.
Once I’d ‘done’ the main show gardens I relaxed a little and found some gardens just as beautiful but without the clamoring hoards. One of my favourites was a stunning kitchen garden – are you surprised? :o)
I want one
I think in future I’d like a lot more time to look around. Oh, and maybe just half on hour before everyone else gets let in :D
Ooh – I’ve just looked out the window to look at my patch and noticed my Cistus has it’s first flower of the year!!

Peter I can well imagine the chaos of trying to take a photo of the gardens not something that would really appeal to me as I hate crowds and I'm sure there would have been plenty of pushing and shuffling even when done politely it still does take away the whole ideal of what a garden sure be like as Blodyn says a garden is a place to relax in and take in the views not trying to elbow your way to the front like a football match.Hel.xxx.

That garden really made me "see" green, too, Peter. It must have been even more tasty looking in the flesh. Lots of great ideas for veggy-growing in small spaces, I thought (but I only saw it on all the TV coverage).

I think you're right - a garden to me is a place to relaxe. Well I can relaxe in my own garden, but there are other gardens that you have to share with people. Perhaps it is not possible to relaxe in the same way in these gardens, but it can be sort of relaxing to be with people that are interested in the same thing. I've never been to such a place as Chelsea though, so I don't really know.
I liked the kitchen garden. I don't think I saw it on the tv.
