Gardeners World Plant List 7th August 2009

I managed to get an episode behind and just had a little catch up of the last 2 episodes of Gardeners World so this is last week’s list.

Toby was at RHS Harlow Carr speaking to one of the gardeners there who said his most used tool was his digital camera to record the plants and borders throughout the seasons – Sounds like a GoY recruit to me :o)

At RHS Harlow Carr, talking about late summer colour for borders:
Monarda ‘Gardenview Scarlet (Bergamot)
Helenium ‘Moerheim Beauty’ (Sneezewort)
Eryngium x zabelii ‘Jos Eijking’ (Sea holly)
Kniphofia ‘Tawny King’ (Red hot poker)

Back at Greenacre Toby took us through lot’s of different Sneezeworts:
Helenium ‘Sahin’s Early Flowerer’ (Sneezewort) – Dark orange & yellow flowers
Helenium ‘Moerheim beauty’ from Harlow Car Burnt orange flowers
Helenium ‘Butterpat’ – bright yellow
Helenium ‘Goldfuchs’ Yellow petals with brown centre

And then Coneflowers:
Echinacea pallida ‘Hula Dancer’ (Coneflower) – White trailing petals
Echinacea pallida ‘Art’s Pride’ – New varietyy with dark orange petals that acquire a pink tinge as they grow.
Echinacea ‘Pixia Meadowbrite’

Alys was planting an edible window box which also had a few violas:
Viola ‘Friolina Yellow’ (Trailing yellow viola)
Mustard ‘Red Frills’ (Red leaf mustard)

Toby was also looking at the veggies they’d grown at Greenacre this year, apparently a good year for runner beans (which I can vouch for):
Dwarf bean ‘Hestia’
Runner bean ‘Lady Di’
Pea ‘Ambassador’

Down on his allotment Joe was using Comfery as a feed:
Symphytum x uplandicum ‘Bocking 14’ (Russian comfrey)

Back at Harlow Carr Toby was helping take cuttings:
Argyranthemum gracile ‘Chelsea Girl’ (Marguerite)
Solenostemon ‘China Rose’ (Coleus)

Then we were taken round the garden of a Salvia enthusiast who spoke about several varieties:
Salvia chionophylla – Blue with sprawling habit
Salvia guaranitica ‘Blue Enigma’ – Tall dark blue perennail
Salvia ‘Indigo Spires’ – Deep purple and attractive to bees
Salvia oxyphora – Fluffy red flowers with sweet scent
Salvia elegans (Pineapple sage) – Good in pots
Salvia officinalis (Common sage) – Used in cooking

Toby back at Greenacre took cuttings of:
Solanum laxum laxum ‘Album’ (White potato vine)

And Carol got to tell us about Eryngiums (Sea Hollies) this week:
Eryngium giganteum (Miss Willmott’s ghost)
Eryngium bourgatii – turns from silver to blue
Eryngium pandanifolium

I must admit I find Alys a bit odd!!! I think she might in fact be a robot. Bring back Carol I say!

Hi Clarice, I've only been to RHS Wisley and definitely find the GW bits more interesting when I recognise areas.

A robot gardener, hehe. I like Alys, she's a bit quirky; I know what you mean about Carol, I think she's my favourite of the four - just so enthusiastic.
