Karen - this is actually a vegetable - salsify!
It is a biennial and I bought a plant last year to grow as an ornamental. This year I have about half a dozen plants that have self sown (I weeded about a couple of dozen more) and will let just one self sow again for next year

It is known as the vegetable equivalent of the oyster ;-)

Never had them either! don't fancy them....somebody told me it's like eating something you grew up your nose! eeeeeeeeuuuuuuuugh!! :S
