Lilies make fantastic cut flowers and do really well in a container, border or wild garden. This popular genus of about 100 species comes in a multitude of shapes and colours.
L.candidum was known in the UK in the 15th C and has been cultivated in the Middle-East since 1500BC as the scent from the white flowers was used to make perfume.
A well known pest is lily beetle – a little red bug that will destroy a lily in no-time. It is worth keeping watch throughout the growing season and pick off any adults, grubs or eggs as soon as you see them.

hi poppy, i am sure that your star gazers will be lovely, they are another one of my favorites, and i do also have some of them in my garden. but they are not like this one as star gazer is an oriental lily this is an Asiatic lily, they are a bit different, Asiatic are not scented and point upwards, where as Oriental lilies point out to the side and are strongly scented. but if you do like this one the variety is 'Dimention' - a little bit harder to find than star gazer, but well worth the look me thinks!

Congradulations! Isn't it wonderful, they visit & you can spoil them rotten, then SEND THEM HOME and relax. I've told my children that it's been the perfect revenge!

Is this the same lily you use for your "avitar" or whatever we call the pictures of ourselves? It looks lighter here, but very similar.

Then it is a gift for you alone, Chris! how nice.... maybe you have something there? maybe do some googling and see if there is a var like it listed...otherwise maybe some plant breeder goofed and you've got something special? Say have you ever done any reading about the plant hunter, (E.H.Wilson), who brought numerous plants back to European gardens from a valley in southwest China. He's best remembered for the Regal Lily...(easter, madonna)
also brought species of clematis, roses, poppies, etc. If you check him out I promise you an interesting read.

Sorry Lori. This is a mystery lily. I bought 2 packets of lilies, all red. I put them all in the same bed (It's my red bed). I was astonished to see this lily appear. They were 2 in each packet and I've definitely got some red ones. So I guess one of the packets had a wrong colour in there. I must say it's a lovely one so I don't mind.

The colour is so delicate...does it have a nice soft fragrance too?

You're asking someone who doesn't have much sense of smell. My bible calls it "sweetly fragrant" so I guess that means it's not too heavy

I had trouble with lily beetles too. Found the best solution was to keep a jar of soapy water nearby and throw them in when caught. They are good at hiding so best to be vigilant and get the larvae.
Love the sunset type colour of your lily!

We had an invasion of Lily beetle for the first time this year. I spotted them over a month ago. We were catching them and also getting rid of the larvea as much as we could. We were due to go away for a week at the time so resorted to some spray that the local hardware shop sold us, so we used it and it did the trick. We havn't seen sign of the beetles since. It depends whether you are prepared to use sprays. We can't get the ones that I see advertised in UK, which say that they are safe, but I know that bees etc can be affected. Are you looking under the leaves for the black blobs which is the larvae covered in excrement (yuk). You need to get rid of these as well as beetles. I've read advice to wash down well with a jet of water or soapy water as well.
