Commonly called bleeding heart due to its pink flowers which resemble the shape of a heart with a drop of falling blood.

Nearly all dicentras are better in shade although dicentra spectabilis will tolerate sun if the soil stays moist

Beautiful picture. I love these, my Grandmother always kept them and they remind me of her. Will be planting some this spring with my fingers crossed!

yes, Fl, you are lucky to get this great colour and shape combination together - love it! Muscari here are not quite in bloom yet (unless bought in pots grown artificially), but the Dicentra definitely belongs to summer!

Luckily here David, in the States my muscari and dicentra spectabilis are both in full boom by the 2nd week of April.

No worries, Sid! I love this pic of the Dicentra with the muscari. Here, I could never dream of seeing the two together in bloom, they belong to different "seasons" (I note your comment, however, Flcrazy).

David - sorry to deceive you!! But I took this photo last year - my dicentra isn't in flower yet, in fact it has only just shown above ground - I've just been adding plants to the site's plant section/my garden bit. Sorry again!
Xela - I'm glad yours is doing so well - I've had mine a few years and it increases in size slightly every year, but doesn't seem to thrive. Still, it is a lovely thing to have.

How come I don't get the flowers of Dicentra until June? I have never seen or thought of it as a Spring flower.

I added one to my garden about three years ago and it has gone from strength to strength. It made such a strong start this year that I decided to split it and plant a piece in the partially restored bed in my partner's garden. This week's cold snap has held back both the original plant and the rehoused piece but they both look as if they will take off again as soon as the weather improves. I split a bergenia at the same time which the muntjac have defoliated but they do not seem to have a taste for dicentra.

Thankyou for the compliment on the complimentary colors. This shade garden in the back of my home is very eye catching in the early spring when the plants and colors are so fresh. Along side these are yellow corydalis and buttercups, primrose ,violets and forget me nots. I will take better pictures this coming spring to share.
I do have a photo in my file of my neighbour's July garden, with the same lime greens and pinks.I will have a look for it.
