Often called by its botanical name, sometimes this genus of about 250 species is known as larkspur. Delphiniums are broken into three groups – elatum, belladonna and pacific hybrids.
In a sunny spot in an idyllic cottage garden you are most likely to find a plant from the elatum group. In Latin ‘elatum’ means tall and these spears of blue, purple, red, pink, yellow and white flowers certainly earn this name!
Delphiniums are highly toxic and in 1788 the first record was made of using the seeds as a rat and ant repellent.

Great photo, the white picket fence really make the delphs pop.! They are definitely a beautiful cottage garden favorite.
