Stunning!
It's in just the right place if you ask me.....

18 Apr, 2011

can you see what is behind it?

18 Apr, 2011

Scarecrow??

18 Apr, 2011

NO! but in a way you are not far off!!

i had to put a black shirt on the fence to get it right ~ it doesnt look right with the fence behind.

18 Apr, 2011

Ah......
Did it alter the shade of the blue in the photo?

18 Apr, 2011

i dont think it did but it just looked wrong, a creamy background that i tried was awful and a green one didnt work either ~ the blue didnt stand out at all.

very nice...

Good of you to take to take all that trouble . . . well worth it, Sticki!

18 Apr, 2011

i havent got it quite right yet sheila ~ i shall probably take more!!

thank you PP, TT and clarice
TT - its an old shirt i had for dressing up i think!!
im also growing some from seed PP - some that karensusan on here sent me.
this plant was given to me as a small plant, it seemed to disappear over the winter but came up suddenly in february/march

It looks beautiful Sticki, I`ve heard they can be difficult to grow so you`re certainly doing something right! :o)

stunning flower ST & well photographed. I use black paper as a back-drop when I want good photo's of my pleione orchids. Worth the extra effort for a good photo is'nt it?
It might be monocarpic, as in it dies after flowering but I need to read-up on that as memory needs refreshing on that point. Good luck with the seed raising.

oh, only one season out of it bampy? that would be sad.
yes its definitely worth getting the background right. i think we have some card which i may have a go with ~ it will be better than the shirt!!
i could try paper ~ drawing pin it to the fence!

I was delighted mine survived the winter Sticki...not flowering yet though.....lovely...

have you got buds on yours motinot? how old is yours?

18 Apr, 2011

Buds on one of mine now. You're right about the colour Sticki. The first one I grew looked like a bit of litter in the garden it was so blue! Now there are lots of them here and they look much better.

19 Apr, 2011

do they come up each year karen? im wondering if it liked that cold winter we just had.

19 Apr, 2011

They do up here Sticki. I think a lot depends on the amount of shade from the heat in summer. I have always found them to be mostly perennial up here. I buy three more every year to increase my stock as I don't have the patience to wait for seed to grow, and I don't think I have lost many, if any so far, in the five years we've been here.

19 Apr, 2011

oh thats good news, thank you. i have your seeds all potted up so hopefully that will keep them going. its shady where i have put the poppy.

19 Apr, 2011

Good! Should be fine then!

19 Apr, 2011

19 Apr, 2011

Amazing photo and flower, it looks like a painting! I've never had any joy with those so well done they aren't easy! Looks really happy and well :)

thank you limpet ~ i was only given it last autumn as a small plant but then it disappeared in the cold winter, next thing i knew it was a substantial hairy plant!! quite a surprise ~ perhaps its related to the yetti??

20 Apr, 2011

Lovely poppy. I tried to grow them but no success.

21 Apr, 2011

Definately as uncommon in my garden as a yeti ;)

22 Apr, 2011

i think the yettis eat my hostas and plant weeds at night.

22 Apr, 2011

Your yetis must go at a snails pace and pick up their habits Sticky. LOL

Wonderful to meet someone else who adores Mecanopsis! I have placed several of mine in front of a large Polystichum setiferum (the dark green sets of a fine background), along with clusters of black "Mondo" or "Lily Grass" - Ophiopogon planiscapus nigrescens. Just a thought which might be worth considering (?)

Temperatures here last July sat at 40 degrees Centigrade for about a week, and even shaded plants were withered badly ... this years' Mecanopsis are not looking very well at all, so it is lovely to see yours!
Kind Regards, Philip L

hello philip ~ welcome to GoY ~ i do like the idea of the grasses around the poppy ~ i had also wondered about a piece of slate standing behind ~ perhaps it would feel more at home??

i looked up the Ophiopogon planiscapus nigrescens and discovered i have that one already!!! [sorry, not up on the names like you are] ~ but its only about 6 inches tall.

the fern: Polystichum setiferum looks really lovely and will grow here ~ so i may have a go at that, thank you ~ its very helpful.

woodland gardener have a look at karensusan's photos ~ she has some wonderful himalayan poppies ~ growing in scotland.
