International Dawn Chorus Day

“An annual International Dawn Chorus Day is held on the first Sunday in May where the public are encouraged to rise early to listen to bird song, at organised events. The first ever was held at Moseley Bog in Birmingham, England in 1984, by the Urban Wildlife Trust” – Wiki

We’ve just missed it this year, but it’s interesting all the same.

I found this by way of another search: I’d heard someone on the radio give the order in which birds joined the dawn chorus, and was looking for that – which the same Wiki page gives.

Wiki says: In the UK the dawn chorus may begin as early as 4am in early summer. The most often heard species of birds are, in order of them beginning to sing:

Blackbird
Robin
Wren
Tawny Owl [surprise!]
Chaffinch
Common Pheasant
Warblers, including Blackcap, Chiffchaff, Garden Warbler and Willow Warbler
Song Thrush
Greenfinch
Dunnock
Goldfinch

It's blackbirds I listen for. They always sound so optimistic, - 'Here's a new day - enjoy! '

lol TT,

The bloke on the radio said that blackbirds have the best vision, so they're first to notice the change in light before/at sunrise

Yes Fran the lovely blackbird always starts off the chorus, bless him, I nearly always hear them start up at about 3.30 ish am!!! In fact we sat and listened to blackbird chirping in the trees at about 11.30pm last eve!! Silly old thing he should have been asleep, but i think the street lights keep them going Lol.

my dad used to be a bus driver and when he was on the very early shift he said there was oftan a blackbird to sing him along the road - just a blackbird, so he must have been out very early.

surprised me that Tawny Owls were on the list at all, let alone so highly-placed - owls don't usually figure in people's images of a dawn chorus
