Question about Kliems Hardy Gardenias

I just planted several Kliems Hardy Gardenias. I live in zone 7. The problem is that the lower limbs are falling to the ground and some of the leaves are turning yellow. I just planted these one week ago and they looked very healthy. At first I thought maybe a cat was crawling through them and bending the leaves, but everyone that I planted is doing the same thing. Does anyone have any suggestions or answers to why the limbs are falling and leaves are turning yellow. We have clay soil, but I amended it with leaf compost and a product called black cow. They are planted at soil height. Should they have been planted higher? Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
