St Allotment

While walking through St James’s Park the other day I came across something I was not expecting to see… An Allotment!

The allotment is in a corner of St Jamesâ€™s Park in the centre of London and depicts a Second World War allotment, growing a selection of vegetables throughout the summer. The allotment has been recreated to celebrate the Dig for Victory Campaign of over sixty years ago. Todayâ€™s Dig for Victory, project has been set up by the Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms and The Royal Parks. It also includes a modern day allotment, exploring themes such as growing vegetables successfully, healthy eating and sustainability as relevant today as they were six decades ago.

The allotments, which covers 500 square metres, is used to grow fruit and vegetables such as potatoes and runner beans. It is tended regularly by local school children and Westminster community groups.

The Dig for Victory allotment is open to visitors free of charge seven days a week from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm till the 30th of September 2007. More information can be found on their website
