Eucomis

I have been growing a mixture of Eucomis from seed, which is easy in my climate. This is one of those summer bulbs that don’t come true from seed. There is every height from about 18" to 4½’; white to pink and red.

They're fantastic, how long do they take to flower for you from seed?

Some (like the one in the last photo) bloomed the following year. The red ones took 4 years for the first flowers.

Longer here I should think if they're anything like the daylilies ;-), I have around 12 seedlings pricked out from your seed but more are popping up all the time so I won't be discarding the pot just yet.

I do like those, I think you have just solved one of my garden mysteries for me, they look like some that I have which had been nameless for the last couple of years so many thanks for sharing....

Thanks :] These have a fantastic long season - from the time the flower stalks come up until the seed pods open.
Simbad: Next year, put them in a large pot (I have 5 in a 1 ft X 2½ ft pot that do very well [2nd photo]), and as long as they don't freeze and get lots of water, they should do well.

I grew E.Sparkling Burgundy from seed (which looks like your 3rd and 4th photos) and they flowered in their 5th year and every year since, beautiful flowers and burgundy coloured leaves. I keep mine in pots and over winter in a cold greenhouse.

Since I live in a warmer area and grow most of these in the ground, my biggest problem is snails during the winter. I have to fill in the holes left by the foliage and stalks with dirt.
