Arundel Farmers Market

On the third Saturday of the month, Arundel, in West Sussex, runs a Farmers Market. We wondered how many stallholders would brave the very cold temperatures yesterday and, surprisingly, there were quite a few.

Locally sourced products ranging from Sussex Beef, Game, Biltong, Bread and Cakes, Honey, Cheeses, Olives, Gin, vegetables to knitted items for children, lovely wood carvings were on offer.

Arundel castle always looks impressive, even from a distance, with boats on the River Arun at the bottom of the photo.

We parked at The Lido open air car park, too cold for a dip though! When I was aged about ten or eleven we would go there for swimming lessons with school … many years ago! It is about six miles from where we now live.

Leaving the car park to the bridge over the river the remains of Blackfriars, a Dominican Friary, come into view.

A closer view of Arundel Castle… note there is no flag flying … this indicates the Duke of Norfolk is not in residence.

The stalls were mainly at the bottom of the hill on the High Street, with the castle at the very top …

Prior to 9/11 there were many antiques shops on the High Street, but the decline has been dramatic as a lot of the customers from the USA no longer visit * *There are now restaurants, cafes, a few clothes shops but no major brand shops to be seen which, to my mind, is a real pleasure!

We turned into Tarrant Street to find a lovely place for coffee and cake …

Having been fortified with a slice of delicious Lemon Drizzle cake and a mug of Latte, we walked along to the Nineveh Chapel Antiques Centre, a two storey building housing many independent antiques businesses, passing a sweet little florist shop on the way.

Time to return to the High Street, walking downhill now, to view some of the items for sale in the antiques shops tucked away in the alleyways between the old buildings.

I thought this window, hidden out of sight at the back of a building was something special.

Finally, a couple of musicians had started to play, just as we were leaving!

Thanks for looking in.

Thanks for sharing, Shirley. I enjoyed our day out, and I wasn’t cold at all! It looks like you had a really nice time, plus apart from the temperatures, it was sunny and dry! Bonus! The castle looks very beautiful, love the architecture. I’m also a fan of old ruins! So, the old monastery appeals to me!
I spotted pistachio cannelloni - delicious! That would have been my choice. Love pistachio nuts, ice cream..the lot!
We like to pop in to antique shops, I love a mooch around. Pleased you enjoyed your day - hopefully wrapped up warm!

Really lovely to see your photos Shirley … I particularly liked seeing the street with ruins down one side. It’s great that your OH enjoys the same type of outing as you, and the cafe definitely a bonus. We eat pistachio nuts by the handful too! Thank you for sharing 🙂.

I just mentioned your jolly photos to my OH, Shirley, and he reminded me the last time we visited was 51 years ago! He even remembered what I was wearing. (I doubt very much I would fit into the cord mini skirt now :-o )
Your pics make me want to go again, so maybe we'll get there this summer, if only for the cakes! I love historical cities and this looks a gem. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you for sharing your stroll in this wonderful town. With regards to antique shops I have noticed over the years that some items are grossly over priced so that they never move out of the shop so that as one returns to the store over the years, they are always there. I always wondered if the shop keepers grew so fond of these items or to put it another way developed a relationship with certain antiques in their store themselves that they priced them so no one would ever purchase them.

Julia, we actually met up with GoY member Sylvia (Cinderella) by the ruins a few years ago.

Kate, those Canolis were tempting, but I felt I would want to have a couple, not a good idea!

Sheila, my only disappointment was to see that a lovely old shop that sold country clothing/boots/hats etc. has gone and is now a burger restaurant.

Klahanie, it was good to have the blue sky, no wind blowing but it was pretty cold at first!

Good grief Ange, what a memory your OH has! Your mini-skirt made a lasting impression on him. I do hope you will

visit Arundel this year, Chichester too, another lovely place.

Loosestrife, our daughter had friends over from New York last September so we met up with them in Arundel. They wanted to try some English tea and Crumpets, we did that, then walked up to Nineveh Chapel antiques where they bought some items to take back with them. They even went to a London theatre to see 'Hamilton' and said it was cheaper to have seen it in England than in New York. How crazy is that?

lovely place to live Sheila , we visit April to East Sussex. Lovely castle - We also go to Hertsmonceux Castle

22 Jan, 2023

Paul, we lived in Hailsham, East Sussex a long time ago and know of both Pevensey and Herstmonceux castles. Lovely part of Sussex, well it was then, who knows how many new houses are around there now?

Thanks for showing us around the town centre, Shirley! I have never been there & I think this is the first time I've even seen a picture of the castle!

I haven't visited a castle since I was about 11 or 12 years old! That was Pevensy castle! I went to Pevensey Bay 3 years in row between 11 & 13! We were taken there by train from London by Social Services I think. It was a camp for boys whose parents couldn't afford to take their children to the seaside. One year 2 of my brothers came with me.

Here in New York, Hamilton tickets for orch and mezz seats are going for over $300 USD. YUP, that is crazy.

one of my relations lives in Pevensey on the farm

23 Jan, 2023

David, I think that's a lovely memory for you. No doubt there are school trips to Pevensey Castle to this day!

23 Jan, 2023

Loosestrife, how can they justify that price for a theatre ticket in N.Y.?

23 Jan, 2023

Paul, that sounds idyllic, to live on a farm, but I bet it's a lot of hard work, especially in the Winter months.

Lovely place,Shirley, and we have some nice memories of Arundel, visiting in 1976,when we stayed on our first Holiday at Southsea.. a heck of a journey by coach back then too ! and more recently when we were staying at Bognor Regis, where we met up with you and Michael, and you so kindly took us out for an afternoon.:o)
We have never fully explored Arundel itself,as that was also part of a coach trip from our Hotel,so it's lovely to see your photo's and what it has to offer.
Maybe we will get to do that one day, who knows ? ..
Thanks for this,Shirley.. x

I've never been to that part of the country but your day out would have been my sort of enjoyable day, I have always enjoyed anything old with a lot of history to go with it, thanks for sharing Shirley...x

A perfect day out with so much to do and see in such a lovely part of the country.

Thank you for sharing it.

Ty, for taking me on a trip down memory Lane. I have been on the topmost turret of the castle,as there was once a Royal Observer Corps post up there ( since disbanded). It was a long time ago when I was a member but I have visited Arundel many times since. I have been in the
Antiques Centre & bought some old post cards there & of course there is the bird life place, but you can’t do it all on one day.
I was in the grounds of the castle one day & I met up with a very friendly cat. It seemed miles from any habitation( to me) but belonged to an antique shop, it had a disc. It happily let me carry it back there( a long way). When I deposited in the shop it’s owner laughed & said that it would probably go straight out there again from the back of his shop, which backed onto all that land below the castle.
Apparently it was in the habit of visiting a restaurant up there, especially for Sunday lunch! What a mug I was. 😊

Sandra, 1976 was the year I met Michael, in that long hot Summer! I enjoyed meeting up with you both and our little drive down to Bosham, good times!

23 Jan, 2023

Sue, you're more than welcome. This is another reason why I enjoy Growsonyou, being able to 'visit' places around Great Britain, and around the world, without leaving home, ha ha!

Chris, I'm afraid that many areas of West Sussex are now losing the fields to housing estates. Our local golf course, parts of which can be seen from the main road, now has diggers churning up the ground for 161 new houses to be built. I have reached the age where I can say, in all honesty, I remember when there were acres of land here, nowadays it's just house after house, a tragedy to my mind. We did actually consider moving away, but that's a long story .....

Josie, that's a wonderfully funny tale and I laughed out loud while reading it! Many thanks for sharing your memory of it ... :o))

I remember our visit to Bosham,Shirley, and I seem to remember you knew, not to park on the road near to the beach ,when the tide comes in, if my memory serves me
correctly?
1976 ,it was our first venture down south, and yes,the heat was unbearable wasn't it? and here we are, reminiscing about the good old days.,which mostly ,they were. !
Not such a good memory of our Hotel in Southsea,it was dire !!

23 Jan, 2023

It looks an interesting historic place Shirley. I love antiques shops.

24 Jan, 2023

Sandra, your memory serves you well regarding Bosham. There is a car park and a path right by Bosham Quay... but beware when the tide comes in as it covers them both!

Shame about the hotel in Southsea ... :o(

24 Jan, 2023

Hywel, I must admit I do like to mooch around antiques shops. We found a really smart RAF cap badge last time we were looking around ... perfect for a friend who was looking out for one.

Thank you for sharing Shirley!
