Bird song

I expect most GoYers are better at identifying the songs of birds than me. But for those who would like to refresh their memories . . . or learn more . . . I recommend trying the podcast by Simon Barnes, which can be found on the Short Books website.

I’m listening as I write, having sat down at the computer with a mug of delicious coffee on this windy, grey morning. Apart from the cuckoo and seagull (of course), the rook, magpie, green woodpecker, turtledove and tawny owl, the only call I definitely knew was the long-tail! So next time you fancy sitting down with a cuppa, have a listen to “Birdwatching with your Eyes Closed”(!) It’s quite entertaining – but I just wish I thought I’d remember more than a few. :))

Another reason to look forward to Spring.

Blackbirds have a very specific call when they are being territorial and defending their patch of the garden !

I too enjoy watching and listening to birds and I can recognize a few Sheila. A good number visit my garden but I haven't being outside for months as my garden is infested with foxes and squirrels. Apart from digging, there are so many fox droppings that I cannot walk without stepping on any of them. Any remedy? I bought a trap but I did not use it, as I am not sure if it is lawful to catch a fox and what to do with it.
