Christmas Lights in Dunbar

When the business community feared their town was under seige from out of town developers they pulled out all the stops to ensure that their customers would want to come down to the High Street. The old lights which had always welcomed shoppers were getting a bit old and needed to be replaced so the businesses clubbed together and invested in lights to put them back on the map. I don’t know of any other town which has done this as effectively as Dunbar in East Lothian. We went down to visit my sister on Wednesday evening and had a meal in the local Italian Restaurant before strolling along the High Street to admire the wonderful displays in the shops or on anything where they could be safely mounted. They put Edinburgh to shame. I took a few photos and I beg your forgiveness because I am no great shakes as a photographer and am totally non technical but I think the results are worth sharing with you.

Love the Buon Natale lights..I wish we would fight for the high street....boarded up shops are so sad.

I agree Pimpernel there is nothing worse than a lot of empty shops making high streets very dismal and unwelcoming. Dunbar was a seaside town where holiday makers flocked in their thousands each summer to enjoy their holidays. Because of that it probably attracted ice cream makers and Fish and Chip shop owners to satisfy their need for good quality but reasonably cheap food. Many owners were of Italian extraction and their offspring still live and work in Dunbar. Buon Natale is a reminder that this is a welcoming community with room for all. Their heritage adds to the rich mix which is Scotland today. There is nothing tacky about the Dunbar Christmas lights. This is obviously a community celebrating the birth of Jesus. No red coated Santas climbing the lamp posts here. There is plenty of parking spaces available and there were lots of visitors from miles around when we were there.

Very pretty. I'm sure the lights attracted lots of shoppers. It's a pleasure to see Christmas lights in the towns.

We too have empty shops in the High Street. I have suggested our Town Council put the Tourist Information Centre into one of the larger shops, with Booking Connection Services for all the local Coach Firms, and one of their staff there on a rota basis to take bookings and deal with enquiries. The money they save on sending out Brochures would pay the rent.

Then, instead of telephoning them, and sending cheques, people could go into the T.I.C. when they are out shopping, choose their holiday, book their travel and insurance with their Debit Cards, and take their documents home.

This idea could benefit every town in the country, as hundreds of people go on Day Trips and Holidays by Coach travel.

Dunbar would seem to be a very forward looking town. The best round here could be a set of illuminated angels "with the big boobies"!

Thank you all for your kind comments and sensible suggestions on reviving our town High Streets. Have a Happy Hogmanay celebration tomorrow. I have started laughing already at your description of your best local lights Bb.

Good to see a town fighting back, Scotsgran, some of our smaller towns have done similar things, including late night opening events with free mulled wine, mince pies etc.

Lovely to see all these lights and its a pity more towns don't do this. One of our old shopping areas has more boards up than shop windows and soon it will be derelict. Its so sad to see , when I think what it was like years ago.Happy new year to you and yours. Thanks for the reply to my aunties poems .
