my potted japanese maple (approx 8 yrs old)blossomed as usual early may but by the end of may all the leaves have died off. is it possible it could have choked and needs planting in the garden and is it possible to do this now as the plant could die if left in the pot. or could it be something else.

If you haven't repotted in 8 years, I'm surprised it remained healthy for so long. Turn it out of its pot to see if its rootbound (will be after that long) and either repot in a larger container with fresh compost, or find a sheltered, shadyish spot in the garden for it. Soak thoroughly before turning out of the pot though.
