I have a Mountain Ash in my garden. This year it has not produced one leaf, one cluster of flowers or berries. My occasional gardener has said it may be resting. Do trees 'rest' or is it on the way out?

With that fungus on it, I would say that the tree is not only on its way out, it probably has already departed!.
Sad though, I love Rowans, we have about 12 of them.

If those mushrooms are present now, or at least, were during September, its honey fungus - the tree's had it, and it would be best to get it removed asap, including having the roots bored out. This MIGHT be enough to stop the honey fungus spreading round the garden - but it might already be too late, only time will tell.

Oh dear Owdboggy and Bamboo, I did wonder. Poor tree. The upside is no leaves on the ground this autumn. Sad though.

If other woody plants in your garden start dying back and looking sick in the next year or so, honey fungus will likely be the problem...

How do I say thanks?
