When planting pond plants, I know I need to buy aquatic coompost but do I have to buy hessian to put in the baskets??

No, but it needs to be small, they usual sell small amounts of small gravel along side aquatic compost.

Thats where you will find Aquatic baskets too - thats why you dont need hessian.
