Hi , I need some potato advice. Planted some seed tatties at the beginning of April (Queens variety) and they have come on a treat. I have two rows of them all earthed up and I'm really happy with their progress - all except one ! In the last week or two just one plant has gone all pale and limp , the leaves are curling and it just looks really poor. It's in the middle of the row and the ones either side are flourishing ! Should I dig this one plant up ASAP or leave well alone. Any help would be appreciated.

I would take it out and see what is wrong with it. If it is being attacked by something then you can prepare to defend the rest of your crop.

Exactly this has happened to mine too, just odd plants here and there. The stem eventually goes black and soggy at the bottom. Our veg man who grows his own brought his disease book round (its got a lot more diseases in it than mine!) and he decided it was virus spread by aphids, which would explain why its just the odd plant. You might as well dig them up as they won't grow any more. There may be a few small tatties if you're lucky.

Thankyou Bulbaholic and Steragram , I have now dug up the affected potato plant and can't see anything untoward ! There were two brown slugs under one of the leaves and a few caterpillars in the soil. And just as you said Steragram the stocks were going all black and slimy. Here's hoping the remainder are fine. Thankyou for your help .... It's fantastic for a newby like me to have the benefit of all your experience.

You're welcome. Here's hoping neither of us find any more of it.
