Newly seeded lawn starting to grow

Dear All,

A couple of pictures of the newly seeded lawn area. Took me a long time to flatten it all with blood, sweat and tears (not neccessarily in that order). Then it rained solidly for three days so its not as flat as I wanted it; but hey, its a woodland garden, so a manicured lawn is not what I am after. I decided to use a ‘Western’ mix though because the Japanese stuff is so coarse (but obviously more suited to the climate). Time will tell if it is a success or not. The main problem is, as you can see, the weeds (thistles etc), but I’ve decided to just leave them for three more weeks and let the grass establish before trying to deal with them. It will look a bit ugly, but the soil is still very spongy so the less treading around on it before it really gets a grip, is the lesser of two evils I think. You will see the apple and pear trees too. I’ve had to spray them (against my basic philosophy) because there is a peculiar small scarab-type beetle that seems to love munching on the newly emerged leaves. No idea what it is, but it seems to like apple leaves rather than pear leaves.

Best wishes,

Peter

Good luck with the lawn .. the rain will help it to grow ... even if slightly uneven ... that will just add to the woodland look !
