Strelizia nicolai

Strelizia nicolai (Strelitzia nicolai (Giant Bird of Paradise))

This doesn't protrude very far from the stem on a very thick stem. There are usually 5 or 6 flowers.

The whole plant is a statement. It is around 20 feet tall and at least that wide. There are 6 flower stems full of flowers.

If you have this in a pot that is anything less than huge, it won't be happy. It took 11 years for my first flower on this, and that was 8 years after I put it in the ground. Now it has a lot of flowers whenever it feels like it. Sometimes in winter, sometimes in spring.

I would imagine it would nt be happy potted this would nt grow out side here it would have to be in a pot .

That is a long time 11 years I would be thrilled seeing the first flower then see lots after when it feels like it which I am amused at ?

Show off!
There used to be one at Oxfords Botanic Gardens but they had to remove it in the end as it was trying to take over. As fast as one new growth was removed two more emerged!

I would take offsets from this, but the crown and everything goes too deep. I have it in an area where it can dominate. The original stalk is still growing, and that's been 16 or 17 years since I started the seed.

I'm so jealous when I see this. Still only five leaves here! One new one about six weeks ago.

While it continues to grow, the regular type has flower spikes!
