Leptospermum scoparium 'Martinii' - 2010

Leptospermum scoparium 'Martinii' - 2010 (Leptospermum scoparium 'Martinii')

Having lost a leptospermum in both the last two winters, I'm growing this one in a bottomless pot sunk into the soil. Come autumn, I'll lift the whole thing (pot and all) and bring it indoors for the winter. The pot-in-the-ground is my onw idea for minimising root damage and disturbance when the plant is dug up

Good idea, ours is in the flower bed, still waiting for it to flower, I do love them, had one in a pot which suffered last winter, so that is in the flower bed as well, hopefully protected.

This one died last winter (I was away when the snow came and it perished before I got back). Bought a different variety in the spring which is now sitting in a pot indoors this winter and looking reasonably happy (so far). I don't think I'm going to risk leaving them out any more - I've had too many disappointments

Me too, such a shame, but I do love them, they are so attractive, there is one growing over a wall just down the road from us and it was a picture a mass of flower, obviously need the shelter of a warm wall, ours is still in the pot needless to say!!.

Hi there,

I have just purchased one of these lovely plants and I am looking forward to receiving it.

I noticed from your comments that you have been having bother with them I the winter and having to bring them inside. So would you advise that I keep this as a container plant? I am in the west of Scotland, if that makes any difference to care instructions given.

Thanks for any advice given! :)

Kind regards,

Nicola

Nicola,
I have found these are not hardy enough to get through the winters here in Berkshire (I generally only get to -6C) so I have to grow it in a pot and bring it indoors. If you lived near the coast in a very mild part (such as Inverewe), you might get away with it as long as it was not subject to salt spray

Take no chances with this plant, think we may have lost another, only time will tell.....
