Saw this kookaburra today feasting on a rhinoceros beetle.

He was holding the rhino beetle in his beak and dashing it against the rock.

I do love these birds.Am I right in thinking they are a member of the Kingfisher family?

Yes they are the largest of the kingfishers Tina2. This particular one is what we call the 'laughing kookaburra' - Dacelo novaeguineae. There is a family of kookaburras that live in the little valley next to my home and we often see them around our yard.

Ooh that's a lovely shot..did you use a telescopic lens? I mostly end up scaring the bird away or, I didn't notice the bird in the first place..lol!!!

Hi Justjan. No I don't use a telescopic lens (don't have one). This bird was about 5 metres away from me in my garden - they come in regularly and as long as you don't get too close they seem to be content to stay where they are.
