A wild orchid

A wild orchid

this emerged amongst a pot of lilies. The leaves are spotted so I had a suspicion it may be a native orchid.
I need to do a proper id but I think it is D purpurella from the shape and colouring. [it is a deeper purple than the photo suggests.

Hi Eileen, I agree, it's more than likely a Dactylorhiza, but there are several contenders among the 30 odd species, so I think you're better qualified than me , to decide which 1 it is, Derek.

What a nice surprise we had one when we moved here but had to risk moving it to renovate this derelict garden it hasn't flowered this year I'm keeping my fingers crossed for it next year ..

i had a friend who called in an expert to identify an orchid that had appeared in several places on her lawn and the result was that it became a protected area and she wasn't allowed to mow for a large part of the year. Wish that would happen to me!

yes that would be good but as OH cuts it so frequently I doubt if they'd get to flowering stage !
