Sandra, I saw the packs of seeds in a GC last Autumn and thought they looked different to the single ones I usually sow.

Lovely flowers! I don't think I've seen a double Cosmos before!

However back in 2012 I got a free packet of seeds, with the gardening newspaper "Garden News", of Cosmos. They were called Cosmos 'Seashells' & the petals were scalloped & looked very pretty indeed. I grew them on my allotment & I was enchanted with them!

I sowed those too Balcony ... seem to recall them having a lot of foliage compared to the amount of blooms though.

I don't think there was more than the in the other varieties of Cosmos.

I've had mixed results growing cosmos from seed in the past. Are they easily available either as seeds or plug plants?

These were sown from a pack of seeds ... I will look for the packet tomorrow and let you know the company.

Thanks Shirley.;)

They are Thompson & Morgan, 40 seeds per pack. Sow in March/April/May to flower July-October. Ht. 2-3ft.

Thanks for that Shirley. They will go on my 'to get' list.

Mine were from Mr Fothergills but they came free with a gardening newspaper.

I remember once doing a trial with Cosmos seeds for the BBC Gardener's World programme. There were different varieties that had to be trailed & the results sent in at the end of the season.

I found them all too big for our balcony but they gave a magnificent show! I no longer remember names of the different varieties. But I've probably got photos of some of the plants still.

I believe there is a new variety of Cosmos available now that is a lot shorted & more compact that the older ones.

Some I grew in the past had very thick stems, lots of foliage but few flowers, while others were the opposite with a mass of flowers but little leaf! Yesterday we drove along the seafront to Worthing and saw the Council gardening team uprooting masses of Cosmos and Poppies ... there had been a lovely display of them all Summer. :o)
